New to VPS hosting? This glossary explains the most common terms you'll encounter while setting up, securing, and managing your server — with links to full guides where relevant.
Core Concepts
VPS (Virtual Private Server) — a virtual machine that gives you dedicated CPU, RAM, and storage on shared physical hardware, with full root/administrator access, unlike shared hosting.
Root Access — full administrative control over the server, equivalent to Administrator on Windows.
SSH (Secure Shell) — the encrypted protocol used to remotely access and manage a Linux VPS from the command line.
vCPU — a virtual CPU core allocated to your VPS; performance depends on both the number of vCPUs and the underlying physical hardware.
Snapshot — a point-in-time image of your entire VPS, used for quick recovery, distinct from application-level backups.
Networking Terms
IPv4 / IPv6 — the addressing systems used to identify your server on the internet.
PTR / rDNS (Reverse DNS) — a DNS record that maps your IP address back to a hostname; important for email deliverability.
Firewall — software (like UFW) that controls which network connections are allowed to reach your server.
Port — a numbered network endpoint (e.g. 22 for SSH, 443 for HTTPS) that a service listens on.
Server Management Terms
sudo — a command that lets a non-root user run administrative commands after authenticating.
systemd / systemctl — the service manager used on modern Linux distributions to start, stop, and monitor background services.
Package Manager (APT) — the tool used on Ubuntu/Debian (apt) to install, update, and remove software.
Cron Job — a scheduled task that runs automatically at defined intervals.
Security Terms
SSH Key — a cryptographic key pair used to authenticate to a server without a password, more secure than passwords alone.
Fail2Ban — software that automatically bans IP addresses showing repeated failed login attempts.
2FA (Two-Factor Authentication) — a second verification step (like a phone app code) required in addition to a password or key.
Web & Email Terms
Reverse Proxy — a server (often Nginx) that forwards incoming requests to backend applications, commonly used for SSL termination and routing multiple sites.
SPF / DKIM / DMARC — DNS-based email authentication standards that help prevent your domain from being spoofed and improve inbox deliverability.
SSL/TLS Certificate — the certificate that enables HTTPS, encrypting traffic between visitors and your server.
Docker & Deployment Terms
Container — a lightweight, isolated environment for running an application and its dependencies, sharing the host's kernel.
Docker Compose — a tool for defining and running multi-container applications from a single YAML file.
FAQ
Is a VPS the same as a dedicated server?
No — a VPS is a virtual slice of a shared physical server, while a dedicated server gives you the entire physical machine.
