How to Set Up Auto-Renewal and Avoid Service Interruption

An expired, unrenewed VPS can be suspended or, eventually, terminated with data loss. This guide covers configuring automatic renewal so your service never lapses unintentionally.

Why Auto-Renewal Matters

Manually remembering to pay every invoice on time is easy to forget, especially across multiple services — a single missed renewal can mean unexpected downtime right when you least expect it.

Step 1 — Log In to Your Client Area

Go to the VPS For Life Client Area and sign in.

Step 2 — Add a Payment Method

Under Billing → Payment Methods, add a credit/debit card or link PayPal for automatic billing. See How to Pay Your VPS Invoice with Credit or Debit Card or How to Pay for VPS Hosting with PayPal for the underlying payment setup.

Step 3 — Enable Auto-Renewal on Your Service

Under Services → My Services, select your VPS and enable the auto-renewal / automatic billing option, confirming the saved payment method to use.

Step 4 — Verify Renewal Reminders Are Enabled

Even with auto-renewal active, keep email renewal notifications enabled in your account settings — this gives you visibility into upcoming charges and a chance to catch any payment method issues before the renewal date.

What Happens If Auto-Renewal Payment Fails

If the saved payment method fails at renewal time, most billing systems retry automatically over the following days and send failure notifications — see What to Do If Your Payment Fails for the full recovery process. Address this promptly to avoid service suspension.

Setting a Backup Payment Method (Recommended)

If your primary card is prone to expiring or being replaced (common with virtual/travel cards), consider keeping a second payment method on file, or set a calendar reminder to update your card details before the expiration date printed on it.

Disabling Auto-Renewal (If You Prefer Manual Control)

You can disable auto-renewal from the same Services section at any time — if you do, make sure to manually track renewal dates to avoid unexpected suspension.

Common Errors

Auto-renewal enabled but the invoice still isn't paid automatically — verify the saved payment method hasn't expired or been declined; check for a notification email about a failed charge attempt.

Service was suspended despite auto-renewal being on — check your email for a failed payment notification; the payment method on file may need updating (see How to Change or Update Your Payment Method).

FAQ

Will I be charged automatically without warning?
No — renewal reminder emails are sent ahead of the charge date, giving you visibility and time to update payment details or cancel if needed.

Can I switch between auto-renewal and manual payment anytime?
Yes, this setting can be toggled anytime from your Client Area's Services section.
