Noble Numbat Arrives With a New Kernel Baseline
Canonical released Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, codenamed "Noble Numbat," on April 25, 2024. As with every Ubuntu LTS release, it sets a new baseline that server operators will run for years: standard security maintenance runs until May 2029, with Ubuntu Pro extending that to 2036.
What Actually Changed Under the Hood
- Linux kernel updated to 6.8, bringing improved syscall performance and nested KVM support
- systemd updated to v255.4
- Networking stack moved to Netplan 1.0, with a stable libnetplan1 API
- GCC updated to version 14, binutils to 2.42, glibc to 2.39
- OpenJDK 21 set as the default Java LTS, alongside continued support for 17
- Security hardening additions including AppArmor 4, FORTIFY_SOURCE=3 by default, and disabling of legacy TLS versions
Why This Matters for a VPS
A kernel and toolchain upgrade of this size is rarely dramatic day to day, but it changes what "current" means for a server. Packages built against glibc 2.39 or GCC 14 may behave differently on an older base image, and container images built on 24.04 inherit the newer kernel's syscall behavior.
For anyone provisioning a fresh Linux VPS, 24.04 is now the sensible long-term default over 22.04 unless a specific application has a hard dependency on the older toolchain.
Minimum Requirements
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is usable on modest hardware: a 2 GHz dual-core 64-bit CPU, with 2 GB of RAM sufficient for a virtualized install and roughly 8.6 GB of disk for a minimal server installation — well within range for an entry-level VPS.
