What “Unlimited” Honestly Means

No network connection is infinite, so the word needs explaining rather than repeating. Here it means two specific things. First: nothing counts your gigabytes. There is no monthly allowance, no meter in the client area ticking towards a line you must not cross, and no invoice that arrives because a post did well. Second: what governs your traffic is the speed of your network port — 1 Gbps on the Classic range, 10 Gbps on the other four — and a fair use expectation aimed at traffic that has nothing to do with running a legitimate service. That is the whole policy. If a host will not tell you where the line is, the line is wherever they decide it is on the day.

The practical reading: the port speed is the only thing that differs, and for most workloads it will not be what you notice. A 1 Gbps port on the Classic range is more than a typical website will ever saturate. The 10 Gbps port earns its keep on large transfers and sharp traffic spikes — and it comes with faster storage anyway, which is usually the more useful upgrade of the two.

Fair Use, Said Out Loud

Every host with an “unlimited” page has a fair use policy. Most of them will not tell you what it excludes. Here it is in two columns.

What is entirely normal

  • A busy website, however busy it gets on a good day.
  • An API or application serving real users.
  • Backups running nightly, however large.
  • A mail server sending your own legitimate campaigns.
  • Container registries, media, downloads for your own product.

What fair use is aimed at

  • Running a public CDN or file-mirror off a single small VPS.
  • Sustained line-rate traffic unrelated to any hosted service.
  • Traffic that degrades the node for everyone else on it.
  • Anything already prohibited by the Acceptable Use Policy.
There is deliberately no gigabyte figure in the right-hand column, because a fixed number would be a data cap wearing a different hat. The test is proportion: is this traffic plausibly a service you are running, or is the server being used as free transit? What a Port Speed Actually Governs

Worth understanding before paying more for a bigger number than your workload can use.

  1. It is a ceiling, not an allowance A 10 Gbps port does not mean you will move 10 Gbps. It means nothing on our side throttles you below it. Your actual throughput is set by your application, your disk and the network between you and whoever is downloading. Ceiling
